Spring, it's the season of start. I feel the great nature empowers us, and I think many workers are motivated to start new things.(Oops, things are going differently in the Southern Hemisphere and near the equator.)

And, in Japan, the season of cherry blossoms (Sakura, in Japanese language) finally came. This flower is the most admired among Japanese people. Kids learn the English words "che.rry blos.som" at school. Most of them don't encounter the word "blossom" besides that time. One of my friends asked me for its meaning. I answered, "It means flowers on a tree." That is, Sakura is flowers of the fruit cherry though most of Japanese people may not be aware of it because the name in Japanese doesn't explicit such a meaning.

Flower: general word
Blossom: flowers on a tree or bush (e.g. cherry tree, apple tree)
Bloom: ornamental flowers (e.g. rose)

Also, "to bloom" means to become remarkably successful. This metaphor is common to English and Japanese language.

I hear from an Occidental friend that cherry blossoms don't make them feel anything special unlike Japanese people though Japanese people feel disappointed about this fact. For example, French people feel impressed rather when they see small yellow flowers mimosa.[FYI] Mimosa cocktail in American English: the marriage of champagne and orange juice.Flavor of France smells good.

春、はじまりの季節。自然から力をもらいますね。たくさんの人が新しいことを始めようとやる気を持っているのではないでしょうか。（と、南半球や赤道付近では事情が違いますね。）

そして日本は桜の季節です。桜の花はcherry blossomチェリーブロッサムだと学校英語で習った人も多いはず。blossomは、大抵このときしか出てこない単語なので元は何の意味なの？と聞かれたことがあります。答えは果樹の花です。つまり桜の花はチェリーの花。日本語の桜という名前からはサクラんぼの花だと気付きにくいですね。

bloom　　観賞用の花（バラなど）

bloomは花盛り、花開く、（能力が）開花する、の意味なので、日本語でも英語でも最盛期を花に例えるのが共通しています。

ちなみに、欧米の人は桜を見ても、さほど何も感じなかったりするのが実情です…。フランス人にとってはミモザという黄色い小さな花のほうが春の代名詞です。予備知識：カクテルのミモザはシャンパン+オレンジジュース（フランスの香りが漂いますね。）
