Management is often compared to control of a plane.
The manager is the pilot and creating the BSC is the equivalent of keeping an eye on all the instruments in the cockpit while flying the plane. To maintain a steady flight, the pilot must watch the different instruments for speed, altitude, wind speed and other factors, and make adjustments if conditions are unfavorable. It is important to know which instruments have an impact on the goal of flying the plane safely and to know what value is important to maintain for these instruments.

経営者はパイロットであり、BSCの作成は操縦中にコックピット内のどのメーターに目をやるかと同じことである。
墜落しないためには、スピード、高度、風速など様々な種類のメーターに目をやり、好ましくない状況であれば調節しなければならない。重要なのは、安全に航行するという目的の達成に影響するのはどのメーターで、それをどの程度の値で保てばよいか認識することである。
